What's New on the Blog Site - May 2021

Spring is here, although it has been rainy and cool in southern Ontario. The pandemic continues to dominant both our day-to-day lives and of course the 24-hour news cycle. While Canada and specifically Ontario are starting to make significant progress with regards to the vaccine (even if the Ford government continues to do their best not to listen to medical advice and make a mess of the rollout) the 3rd wave along with the increasing variants of concern are a very very dangerous trend. Let's hope we all make it through this safely and can enjoy time together soon.

I read 10 books last month. You can see the summary and ratings in the What to Read blog. Among the 10 books were two surprises that I really enjoyed. Surprises because I knew very little about the subject of either book but they both turned out to be excellent. The first, Open by Andre Agassi was well written and interesting from cover to cover. I am not a tennis fan and knew little about Agassi but it was a great memoir. The second, Midnight in Chernobyl: the Untold Story of the World's Greatest Nuclear Disaster was again a subject I knew very little about. Although scary and disturbing it was a great read. Check out all the books I am sure you will find something good to read. My non-fiction book of the month is Can You Hear Me Now? How I Found My Voice and Learned to Live with Passion and Purpose by Celina Caesar-Chavannes. This is without a doubt the most open, honest, transparent memoir I have ever read. At times you have to read the pages twice to recognize that the author is actually saying what she is saying about herself. She also confirms what I have felt for a while about Justin Trudeau. Ms. Caesare-Chavannes was Trudeau's parliamentary secretary (she was the MP for the riding we live in) and describes Trudeau as the petty, entitled, self-centred prick that I also think he is. So lots to enjoy in this book (smile). My fiction pick for the month is Mexican Gothic by Sivia Moren-Garcia. The novel is a horror, something I never read but I completely enjoyed this one. I am guessing you will also.

I did publish my Quick Takes for last month. Take a read and let me know anything you agree with, disagree with or think I missed.

Just one new wine tasted last month, Stave and Steel Bourbon Barrel Aged Cabernet Sauvignon from California. Delicious. For the wine of the month, I picked one of our favourite whites, Oyster Bay Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand.

I have a couple of ideas for posts this month and assuming that Ford continues to ban golf I should have time to write and get them posted.

As always let me know any comments at thethirdperiod.ca@gmail.com
