The summer is just racing by, June is over and we are now into July. As we watch the COVID-19 cases explode in the US and increase in pockets in Canada it certainly feels like the current situation is going to be with us for a while. My conclusion, given the cases we are seeing in the US, the cases we see as sports teams try and restart their seasons, and in Canada is that the virus is still very prevalent and out there. As soon as people start going out more, interacting with more people, and follow the public health guidelines less diligently more people start contracting the virus. All that to say, be careful and stay safe, we want everyone to make it through this.

June was a great month. I got to play golf (finally! (definitely the latest I have ever started)). I had decided not to join a club this year given the pandemic and will only play when I can get a group together with family or friends. That started in June which was great. Teresa, Sean, Lauren, and I had a regular weekly game. We played a couple of times with the whole family (two groups) and I got one round in with my grade school friends, Paul and Mike (Sean joined us as our fourth). We got to the cottage twice in June (again very late for the first time) but had a great time.

So there are a few new things added to the blog for June (the combination of the great weather, golf, and the cottage definitely slowed my reading and writing and I will work to get on that over the next couple of months!).

New in books - I added 4 new books to the list this month (definitely a slow month). The combination of a couple of monster books (Rachel Maddow's below and one I am still slugging through on passage of power from John F. Kennedy to Lyndon Johnson) and the great weather definitely left less time for reading. All the new books, three non-fiction, and one fiction are highlighted in red. The two books of the month are also highlighted in red.

You can find all this on the What to Read post.

The non-fiction book of the month is Winners Take All: The Elite Charade of Changing the World by Anand Giridharadas. An interesting book at any time I think given the pandemic this book is particularly thought-provoking. Well written, balanced, and applicable right now I definitely recommend this.

The fiction book of the month is Fields of Fire by James Webb. James Webb has quickly become one of my favorite authors. I have read and watched lots about Vietnam, I think this is the best book I have ever read on the subject. It definitely gives you a sense of what it was like to be there, the impact on individuals, families, and the country.

Last but certainly not least a reminder that I posted our oldest son Sean's acceptance speech for the Faculty Medal award for Social Sciences (highest GPA in all of social sciences). Congrats Sean, we are very proud of you. Sean's speech is very applicable to all of what is going on now so definitely take a read.

That is it for now. Remember, any thoughts or ideas send them to the thethirdperiod.ca@gmail.com.
